It's not an escape, it's a return.

How does Ketamine work in the brain and body?

Ketamine is unique among psychiatric medicines because of how it works on both a neurological and experiential level—helping to soften entrenched patterns in the brain while creating space for deep emotional processing and integration in the body.

Biochemically, ketamine influences glutamate—the brain’s primary excitatory neurotransmitter—helping to create new neural pathways and reduce the intensity of depressive or trauma-related thought loops. This makes it especially effective for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and other conditions where the nervous system has become locked in survival responses or rigid emotional patterns. Many clients describe it as giving their brain “room to breathe” again.

But the real power of ketamine comes when it's used in combination with therapy. The medicine opens a window of plasticity—a time when the brain and body are more receptive to change—and psychotherapy helps translate that window into lasting healing. At Demystified Mental Health, we pair ketamine treatment with somatic and trauma-informed practices that help your nervous system feel safe enough to shift, not just cognitively but physically and emotionally too.
